Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that can build up inside homes, especially those with basements. While low levels of radon are found almost everywhere, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends action if levels reach 4.0 picocuries per liter or higher.
Testing for radon is simple. You can hire a professional for about $200 to $300, or purchase a home radon detector for around $150. Both methods provide reliable results.
If mitigation is needed, the process is also straightforward. When I had it done in my own home, it cost about $1,600 for a professional company to install the system. For those curious, the installer drills a hole into the foundation, usually near the sump pump or catch basin in your basement or crawl space. A vent pipe runs from that opening through the exterior wall and up past the roofline. A fan is attached to the vent, which constantly pulls radon gas out and keeps the levels inside your home safe.
